RSU 18 is in the process of finalizing a budget for the 15 – 16 school year that we hope to have voted on and passed in the upcoming months.
Over the past 4 years our school district has had a total of 5% increase. We think that is very responsible spending of hard earned tax payer dollars. Unfortunately during this time period, due to valuation changes of land in our towns, and cuts in both federal and state monies, the change to local taxes has been greater than this 5%. The key is to balance what we need to provide a quality education to our students, and at the same time be responsible to the taxpayers in our towns, many of whom struggle.
There are a few important dates to keep in mind in the budget process.
4/16 – Public hearing on the proposed budget. 6:00 at CMS
5/7 – District budget hearing. 6:00 Messalonskee High School
5/19 – District Budget Validation Referendum – Voting will be in China
Please take part in this process. I also encourage you to come into the schools to see me and see the great things going on at the China Middle School. These kids are amazing and they work so incredibly hard.
